Coalition Agreement Netherlands

The Netherlands made headlines in October 2017 when a new Dutch government was formed after a record-breaking 208 days of negotiations. The coalition agreement, also known as the “regeerakkoord,” outlines the policy priorities and goals of the new government. Let`s take a closer look at what the coalition agreement means for the Netherlands.

The coalition government is made up of four political parties: the liberal VVD, the progressive D66, the conservative Christian Democratic Appeal (CDA), and the conservative Christian Union (CU). Together, they hold a slim majority of 76 seats in the 150-seat House of Representatives.

One of the key policy areas of the coalition agreement is climate and sustainability. The government aims to reduce carbon emissions by 49% by 2030 compared to 1990 levels, and to phase out the use of coal for electricity generation by 2030. The Netherlands is also committed to the Paris Agreement and will increase its investment in renewable energy.

Another important area of focus is education. The government has pledged to invest €2.5 billion in education over the next four years, with an emphasis on reducing the teacher shortage and improving the quality of education. There will also be changes to the student loan system, with a lower interest rate and more flexible repayment options.

In terms of immigration, the coalition agreement proposes stricter measures to control immigration and asylum. The government will increase investments in asylum procedures and integrate refugees into Dutch society through language and integration courses. There will also be a ban on face-covering clothing such as the burqa and niqab.

The coalition government also plans to reform the healthcare system, with a focus on prevention and reducing costs. The government will establish a national prevention agreement to encourage a healthy lifestyle, and will invest in mental healthcare and digital innovation.

Overall, the coalition agreement represents a compromise between the four parties and their differing viewpoints. While some policy areas have been prioritized, such as climate and education, others have been subject to negotiation and compromise. The Netherlands has a long history of coalition governments, and the current government will undoubtedly face challenges in implementing its agenda. Nevertheless, the coalition agreement provides a roadmap for the next four years and gives insight into the government`s priorities and goals.
